Trauma Healing is a Spiritual Process

At first glance, trauma and spirituality might seem like polar opposites, but they are intricately connected in ways that can profoundly transform your healing journey. In our upcoming workshop, "Trauma Healing is a Spiritual Process," we'll explore how trauma healing not only mends the body and mind but also reconnects us with our Essential Self—an eternal part of us that remains untouched by trauma.

Understanding the BodyMind

In the Trauma Energetics Coaching Program, we explore the concept of the BodyMind—a term that encompasses the physical body, thoughts, emotions, perceptions, imagination, and rational thinking. Simply put, the BodyMind is a unified system where our physical, mental and emotional aspects interact, influencing every aspect of our physiology.

Because unresolved trauma was a situation where we had distress without resolution, and we didn't get to discharge and reset our system, we subconsciously got stuck in perpetual fight-flight-freeze physiology. This leaves a lasting imprint on the BodyMind, affecting every aspect of our physiology and shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Trauma and the long-lasting fight-flight-freeze physiology disconnect us from our Essential Selves.  Through the struggle to survive trauma, we learn to depend on survival patterns of beliefs and behavior such as hyper-vigilance, avoidance, or self-isolation that keep us more identified with our trauma than with our Essential Self.

The Spiritual Aspect of Trauma

Trauma healing is not just about addressing the physical, mental, or emotional wounds; it's about reconnecting with the part of us that transcends these experiences—the Essential Self. This aspect of our being is wise, loving, centered, and resilient. It is the part of us that remains unscathed by trauma.

As we heal and integrate the fragmented parts of ourselves, we naturally begin to identify MORE with our Essential Self than our wounds, opening us up to a deeper understanding of our spiritual nature. This process allows us to reconnect with our inner self, the source of our innate wisdom and compassion. When this connection is restored, we feel more whole and connected to others, the world around us, and something greater than ourselves. You may call that God, the Universe, Nature, Spirit, Creator, or something else that resonates with you. What matters is that when you trust something bigger than yourself, whatever you may call it, your BodyMind can relax and let go of the constant survival physiology that has kept you from feeling whole, healed and vibrantly healthy.

The Pitfall of Spiritual Bypassing

It's essential to be aware of the potential pitfall of spiritual bypassing, especially for those with a history of dissociation. Spiritual bypassing occurs when we use spiritual practices to avoid dealing with unresolved trauma. For instance, we might use meditation or prayer to escape from our emotions rather than facing them directly. While these practices can provide a genuine connection to the spiritual realms, they can also be a means of dissociation if not approached mindfully.

Holistic healing involves integrating all parts of ourselves, not just escaping into a higher state of consciousness. It requires us to stay grounded in our bodies and present with our emotional experiences while embracing our spiritual nature. This can be very challenging because trauma often leaves us feeling unsafe in our bodies. Cultivating a felt sense of safety in the body should be a top priority in your healing protocol. You can find many videos on how to ground and feel safe in your body on our Youtube channel.

The Spiritual Process of Trauma Healing

Another crucial key to trauma healing lies in the practice of objective observation. This simple yet profound practice involves noticing and naming our experiences without judgment, with curiosity and compassion. By doing so, we begin to identify ourselves as the consciousness observing the experience rather than the experience itself. You are not your trauma. You had a traumatic experience.

This shift in perspective allows us to remain regulated, even in the face of triggering events. From this place of regulation, we can choose our responses and resolve the trauma that has been stuck in our system. As we clear these blockages, the channel to our Essential Self opens, allowing us to access our intuition and inner wisdom leaving us feeling whole, connected and empowered.

In Conclusion

Trauma is not just a physical or emotional experience; it is deeply spiritual. Healing from trauma involves reconnecting with our Essential Self, integrating the fragmented parts of our being, and embracing the spiritual process that unfolds along the way. Healing from trauma is about rediscovering and cultivating a relationship with your true self—the part of you that is wise, loving, and connected to something bigger that you. By embracing this spiritual process, you can transform your life and experience the peace and freedom that can only happen as a result of a deep and intimate connection with your True Self.
